A postcard from Bali.

Dear Nomads,

What is your dream? No, I mean it: What is it you want to do with your life, but for some reason keep postponing? I tell you what my dream is: To live a simple life next to the ocean, learn how to surf and feel the warm sand under my feet every day. Of course I always thought I’d live that dream once I’m old… you know: retired and rich. But by accident it so happened that I am living this dream right now, in Bali, helping out at the Rapture Surf Camp in exchange for free board and surf lessons.

I wasn’t exactly planning on coming here, but in retrospect it becomes pretty clear that I was meant to.

So, I was in Thailand and everything felt wrong. Do you know that feeling? You meet the wrong people, you eat the wrong food, you get food poisoning, you find yourself in beautiful places but for some reason end up not “feeling it”… and then you move on. Which is what I did. I booked a flight to Bali, looked for some work to keep me occupied and finally found the courage not to postpone my dream anymore. Ever since my life has completely changed. I am happy. I find myself getting up before sunrise (yes, that’s right!) to go to the beach and surf (exercise before breakfast… shocking!). Granted: I am not any good. In fact: I suck! I keep falling off my board, swallowing the Indian Ocean and hurting myself. But nonetheless, I keep on paddling because it’s my only chance of ever getting better (and of not drowning for that matter…)

Bali changes me.

It is an amazing place with amazing people. But although I love being here, I know I am not meant to stay. I don’t belong here. Bali, to me, is a temporary romance. One of those deep but brief lovestories that grow you and somehow bring out the best in you…

“The best love is the kind that awakens the soul and makes us reach for more, that plants a fire in our hearts and brings peace to our minds. ”
- N. Sparks

.

.. and then you move on, smiling.
